SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Too Good to Get Married
DESCRIPTION:Join Bonnie Yochelson as she discusses her new book\, Too Good to Get Married: The Life and Photographs of Miss Alice Austen. \n\n\n\nAlice Austen was an amateur photographer known for documenting Victorian society life on Staten Island. Austen became known for a group of humorous photographs in which she and her friends challenged gender norms— “smoking” cigarettes\, feigning drunkenness\, and dressing in men’s clothing—and for “Street Types of New York\,” a portfolio depicting people who worked on Manhattan’s streets. Since then\, her former home has become a museum\, and she is celebrated as a photographer and an LGBTQ+ icon. \n\n\n\nDiscover what inspired Yochelson to write about Alice Austen\, how Austen challenged and conformed to the ideals of Staten Island society\, and the historical significance of her photography. \n\n\n\nThis is an online (Zoom) event. SUMMARY:Dress Reform and Women's Rights
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid Lecture (in-person or via Zoom) – Ashley Hopkins-Benton\, Senior Historian and Curator of Social History at the New York State Museum. \n\n\n\nIn the early 19th century\, women’s rights reformers were interested in tackling a variety of issues that were holding women back\, including the very clothes they wore! For many reformers\, the movement soon coalesced around work toward the right to vote (seen as the best way to affect change in other areas)\, but that didn’t stop many from trying reform dress\, or what became known as the Bloomer Costume. \n\n\n\nThis talk will focus on the way the dress reform movement and suffrage movement intersected\, and how women reformers in the broader world were inspired by what women in places like the Oneida Community were wearing. \n\n\n\nHopkins-Benton’s book\, Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial\, will be available for signing and purchase following her talk. \n\n\n\nRead more at the Oneida Community Mansion House website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare:

SUMMARY:Way Beyond Seneca Falls: Women's Suffrage\, an Unfinished Revolution\, and the Power of Place in NY
DESCRIPTION:Note: This is an online-only event. Please register ahead of time. \n\n\n\nVoting rights are the essential building block of our democracy. Yet voting rights for many people remain endangered today. And for most of US history\, only a minority of US citizens could vote\, mostly property-owning white males. That changed with the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1920\, the culmination of the largest nonviolent movement for social change in American history\, recognizing voting rights for women as well as men. New York State played a key role in that story. This presentation highlights the importance of grassroots action by women and men\, both Black and white\, in New York State’s historic movement for woman suffrage. It challenges us to consider whether community-based organizing remains a powerful tool in the unfinished revolution for voting rights today. \n\n\n\nJudith Wellman is the Principal Investigator\, Historical New York Research Associates\, and Professor Emerita\, State University of New York at Oswego. Judith focuses on historic sites relating to women’s rights\, the Underground Railroad\, and African American life across New York State. She lives in a house with unruly gardens on the banks of a millpond in upstate New York. She views historical work relating to equal rights as a contribution to a future of mutual respect and justice for all people. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare:
