SUMMARY:Another Declaration of Independence
DESCRIPTION:At the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention—the first formal women’s rights convention ever held in the United States—organizers delivered an address patterned on the Declaration of Independence. Their Declaration of Sentiments included a simple adjustment to Jefferson’s phrasing: “We hold these truths to be self-evident\, that all men and women are created equal.” With these words\, women’s rights advocates asserted that political equality aligned with the nation’s founding principles. \n\n\n\nOur curators discuss the Seneca Falls Convention and the Declaration of Sentiments with Dr. Judith Wellman\, Professor Emerita from the State University of New York at Oswego and Director of Historical New York Research Associates. \n\n\n\nThis event is for teachers\, students\, and their families—and everyone with an interest in history! Everyone who registers will be sent a Zoom meeting link and instructions in the confirmation email. PD certificates will be sent to all who attend the entirety of the program. Please add the Gilder Lehrman Institute to your email safe sender list. For more information\, please contact us at collectionprograms@gilderlehrman.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare:

SUMMARY:Frank Leslie Buys Women's Votes
DESCRIPTION:Carrie Chapman Catt said that the passage of New York State’s Women’s Suffrage Amendment in 1917 was the “Gettysburg of the Women’s Suffrage movement.” Yet just two years earlier\, New York State had voted the same measure down. What changed in two short years? One of the major differences was money. Where did the money come from? Enter Frank Leslie — just one of eight names Miriam Leslie would have during her lifetime. Who was this woman who would leave nearly two million dollars to Catt to fund the fight for women’s suffrage? Where did her money come from? We’ll be exploring the whole fascinating story in this 30-minute Zoom presentation. Presented by Nancy Brown\, historian and educator. \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required to receive the link. Register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/9uAJeDmQQCyQ-fBvhpff2w#/registration. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare:
